Dasso adds assistant

URBANA — Former Illinois women’s tennis volunteer coach Ric Mortera, who served as an assistant at Purdue last season, has rejoined Illini coach Michelle Dasso’s staff as an assistant coach.

This spring, Mortera helped lead the Boilermakers to the second round of the NCAA Championships for the second time in school history.

During the 2012-13 season, Purdue reached No. 14 in the ITA rankings, its best showing in program history. The Boilermakers’ 18 victories matched their all-time high.

Prior to Purdue, Mortera spent two years at Illinois, helping the team reach No. 18 in the national rankings. During his tenure, five Illini earned All-Big Ten recognition, while six players were ranked in singles or doubles.

“Ric bleeds Orange and Blue, and his loyalty to the university and this program speaks for itself,” Dasso said. “We have thoroughly enjoyed working with each other in the past, so there is already a foundation of trust, belief in each other and loyalty. I believe these elements are key to any program’s progress and future.”
