All UI women''s entrants named All-Americans

INDIANAPOLIS Three entrants. Three All-Americans. Ten team points.

That''s how the numbers added up for the University of Illinois women''s track and field team as it finished in a tie for 18th place Saturday in the NCAA Indoor Championships at the RCA Dome.

"I think you have to be pleased when you bring three people to a meet and they all make All-American," UI coach Gary Winckler said of Benita Kelley, Stacy Ann Grant and Collinus Newsome.

Kelley led the Illini effort with a fourth-place finish in the 55 meters. The Illini junior, who placed third in this meet last year, finished in 6.82 seconds. Michigan State''s Sevatheda Fynes, who won the 55 in the Big Ten Championships at Champaign two weeks ago, captured the NCAA title as well with a 6.65 clocking.

Grant, a sophomore, placed fifth in the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches. She had tied for fifth as a freshman in the NCAA outdoor meet. Amy Acuff of UCLA won Saturday''s final round at 6-3 1/4.

"In Benita and Stacy''s case, I know they''re a little disappointed they didn''t finish higher," Winckler said, "but I felt they competed really well. Stacy was in a good, tough field and wasn''t ranked that high coming in."

Illinois'' third All-American was shot putter Collinus Newsome, who was eighth at 50-3 1/4. The Illini junior placed sixth in the NCAA indoors last year. Tressa Thompson of Nebraska won Saturday with a toss of 59-0.
