Clemson picks UI track aide

Ron Garner, who served as the top assistant to University of Illinois women's track coach Gary Winckler for six years, has been named head coach of the Clemson women's program.

Garner previously coached at the South Carolina school for five seasons as an assistant. He replaced Wayne Coffman, who recently was reassigned as an academic adviser in the Tigers' athletic department.

During Garner's tenure, the Illini won six Big Ten team titles and placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships four times. He served as Winckler's recruiting coordinator and had primary responsibility for coaching the throwers and horizontal jumpers.

Winckler said Tuesday he has begun a search for a replacement and hopes to hire a new aide as soon as possible. He also is assisted by Michelle Byrne, who works with the middle- and long-distance runners.
