Yvonne Harrison, Aspen Burkett and Bobby True survived the first round of qualifications Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Also moving on: Illinois' 4 x 100-meter relay team.
Harrison was second in her 400 hurdles heat in a season-best 56.38 seconds. The final is Friday.
"Yvonne had a fantastic performance," UI coach Gary Winckler said.
Burkett qualified for Friday's 200 final by placing fourth in her heat in 23.49. Benita Kelley did not qualify.
True's time of 1:48.13 – a season best – was tops among all 800 competitors. The final is Friday.
"When he runs like that it maks me think he can do whatever he wants to do in a race," UI assistant coach Tom Doyle said.
The relay team of Lyria Martin, Kerry Ann Richards, Kelley and Burkett ran a season-best 44.04, good for third place. The final is Friday.
Pittsburgh drafts Illinois recruit
University of Illinois recruit Matthew Vorwald, a right-handed pitcher from Freeport, was selected in the 30th round of the major league baseball free agent draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was the 898th player picked overall.
Marshall sparks Illinois spikers
Tracey Marshall led the way as the Illinois volleyball team beat Club Activa of St. Anthonis, Netherlands, 13-15, 14-16, 15-13, 15-2, 15-8 Wednesday. Marshall had 19 kills, 18 digs, four blocks and hit .317 for the Illini, who improved to 8-3 on their 17-day trip to Holland. Cristy Chapman had 17 kills, 10 digs, five blocks and hit .353.
