Illini senior All-American
Joe Knuffman earned All-American honors Thursday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., the Illini senior finishing seventh in the long jump.
Knuffman''s leap of 7.71 meters didn''t match his qualifying effort (7.82) but was good enough to place among the nation''s elite. Penn State''s John Gorham edged Knuffman for sixth place by virtue of a tiebreaker.
"Whether Joe got sixth or seventh was not important to us," UI assistant coach Tom Doyle said. "All that matters is that he is an All-American and can be proud of that."
On the women''s side, Benita Kelley and Aspen Burkett each qualified for tonight''s semifinals of the 100-meter dash. Kelley finished in 11.48 seconds, Burkett in 11.64.
Burkett win compete in 200 semifinals and, along with Kelley, Lyria Martin and Kerry Ann Richards, run a leg in the UI''s 4 x 100 relay. Both events are tonight.
In the shot put, Collinus Newsome made her third-best throw of the outdoor season (15.69 meters) but did not qualify for the finals. She was 13th nationally last year.
