Illinois senior Bobby True, who broke a 14-year-old record in the 600 meters last weekend at the Big Ten Men's Track and Field Championships in Madison, Wis., was named the conference's Track and Field Athlete of the Year on Friday.
True will compete in the 800 meters at the national indoor championships March 20-21 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
Illini Jason Van Swol earned Freshman of the Year honors after winning the 800 in 1 minute, 51.81 seconds at the Big Ten meet.
Illinois loses lead, drops season opener
SAN ANTONIO – Illinois shortstop Jon Anderson and third baseman Craig Marquie each had three hits, but Texas-San Antonio rallied for a 7-6 victory Friday in the UI's season opener.
Dan O'Neill, a Champaign Central product, homered and drove in two runs for the Illini, who led 6-3 after seven innings.
UI sophomore starter Jason Anderson allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) in five innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Bob Burlage, who yielded one run on two hits in the ninth inning, took the loss for Illinois, which plays the Roadrunners (5-12) at 1 p.m. today.
First baseman Kevin Rudden also had three of the UI's 16 hits.
