Spencer joins Riley as Bowerman semifinalist

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois freshman Ashley Spencer was selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the female Bowerman Award, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

The award is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding male and female collegiate track and field athletes.

The Bowerman Advisory Board will choose three finalists June 29, and the winner will be named Dec. 19 in conjunction with the USTFCCCA Convention in Orlando, Fla.

"I'm really excited about being a semifinalist," Spencer said. "It's just the icing on the cake to be considered for this award. It feels great to be mentioned in the group of ladies who have achieved so much throughout their careers. I worked so hard this year, and it's definitely paying off."

On Monday, fellow Illini Andrew Riley was announced as a semifinalist for the men's Bowerman Award.
