Ex-Illini Riley shines at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa  — Rookie Andrew Riley beat London Olympic champion Aries Merritt in the 110-meter hurdles to highlight the Drake Relays on Friday night.

Riley, the 2012 NCAA winner for Illinois at Drake Stadium, finished in 13.43 seconds and earned $25,000.

Merritt was second and got $15,000 of a $50,000 purse introduced this year for elite invitational races.

Fellow American gold medalist Jenn Suhr finished second to Cuba’s Yarisley Silva in the women’s pole vault. Silva, who had to settle for silver in London, cleared 15 feet, 11 inches, while Suhr topped out at 15-21/4.

London gold medalist Brittney Reese won the women’s long jump with a world-leading mark of 22-91/4.
