Spencer advances at NCAAs

EUGENE, Ore. — Illinois’ Ashley Spencer, the defending outdooor champion in the 400, won her heat in 51.61 seconds and qualified for the finals with the third-best time at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday.

Despite finishing with the 12th-fastest time overall, Morolake Akinosun advanced in the 100 by taking second in her heat in 11.34.

Samantha Murphy moved on in the 800 (eighth overall in 2 minutes, 4.20 seconds).

On the men’s side, Illinois’ 400 relay ended 13th. Juan Paul Green (14th in 46.18 seconds and Stephon Pamilton (23rd in 47.72) did not advance in the 400.
