Former Illini captures second straight national title

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gia Lewis-Smallwood continued an impressive post-graduate career in discus, winning her second consecutive title in the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Sunday.

Lewis-Smallwood, a 2001 University of Illinois graduate who competed in the school’s track and field program for four years, threw a distance of 216-5 — nearly 66 meters. The toss broke the meet and facility records and put her six meters ahead of the second-place finisher.

“It was a great, dominating performance for Gia,” event coach Mike Turk said in a press release. “She amazes me with her continuing dedication and work ethic.”

She won her first national championship last year at Drake Stadium in California, throwing a facility record 213-8 (65.13 meters).
