Big Ten honors Buford-Bailey

CHAMPAIGN –Former Illini track standout and current assistant coach Tonja Buford-Bailey is being honored by the Big Ten as part of the celebration of Black History Month.

The conference is commemorating 22 African-American former student-athletes on its Web site for their achievements and contributions to their schools

Winterhalter caps Illini rally

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois senior Matt Winterhalter hasn't had many opportunities to shine on the wrestling mat during his Illini career. Then came Sunday afternoon.

With the seventh-ranked Illini trailing No. 16 Ohio State 18-15 in the Big Ten dual, the only match remaining was the 174-pound weight class.

Gonzales seals first-round win

CHICAGO – For the sixth consecutive year, Illinois has reached the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships.

The host Illini beat No. 9 Oklahoma State 4-2 when Ruben Gonzales clinched the match with a dramatic 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) win against Dmytro Petrov. It was No. 6 Illinois' fifth win against a Top 20 team this season.

URBANA – Illinois men's tennis coach Brad Dancer came away from Saturday's match against Texas A&M pleased with his team.

His fans weren't too shabby, either.

Mexicano powers Illini to season-opening wins

MIAMI – Coach Terri Sullivan's Illinois softball squad had a good start to its season Friday at the Diamond Fun & Sun Classic, topping No. 20 Louisville6-2 and Florida International 11-5.

In the Illini's season opener against the Cardinals, shortstop Angelena Mexicano went 3 for 4 with three runs and left fielder Makenzie Smith was 2 for 4 with three RBI. Reliever Ashley Wright allowed no runs on three hits in 4< 1/3> innings to earn the victory.

Illini complete sweep, gain dose of confidence

URBANA – A slow start didn't prevent Illinois from completing a weekend men's tennis sweep.

Bouncing back after losing the doubles point, the seventh-ranked Illini rallied past No. 41 Tennessee 4-3 on Saturday night at Atkins Tennis Center.
