Stark a bright spot in exhibition

CHAMPAIGN — Ali Stark had the last say in the Illinois volleyball team's Alumni Event exhibition match Saturday night at Huff Hall.

Her double-double had a lot to do with the outcome, too.

With coach Kevin Hambly mixing and matching the roster of his seventh-ranked team in a highly competitive intrasquad duel, Stark's 21st and final kill capped the White team's comeback win against the Orange — 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Stark also finished with 14 digs while hitting .250 in 48 swings.

"I thought Ali had a good night tonight," Hambly said. "Everyone was kind of up and down. I thought Ali was the most consistent."

Although the teams combined for 20 aces, they also committed 28 errors from the service line.

"Sloppy," Hambly said. "We missed a lot of serves. ... The things I liked is we played hard on defense, we blocked pretty well."

Liz McMahon had 14 kills but also 12 errors in 56 swings. McMahon and Erin Johnson (10 kills) each notched eight block assists. Anna Dorn added eight kills and five blocks.

"It's kind of what we expected with all these young kids out there," Hambly said. "You see the potential in the group, but we've got a lot of work ahead of us. The challenge is you can't make the kids mature faster. They're going to mature as they mature. We're going to have to get a lot of experience, play a lot of matches."
