Big Ten honors Birks

Outside hitter Jocelynn Birks was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week in women's volleyball after leading No. 23 Illinois to the Texas Invitational title last weekend.

The 6-foot-2 redshirt freshman recorded double-doubles in kills and digs in Illini victories against No. 6 Texas, Central Florida and Cincinnati. The LaGrange Lyons High School graduate averaged 5.0 kills and 3.3 digs per set.

Birks was selected tournament MVP after leading all players in total kills (60) and points (65).

The weekly conference honors were the first of Birks' career. She is the first Illini to be named Big Ten Player of the Week since Michelle Bartsch on Sept. 26, 2011, and is the UI's first Freshman of the Week since Anna Dorn on Oct, 10, 2011.
