Big Ten honors setter Viliunas

Illini setter Alexis Viliunas, who produced a double-double in her collegiate debut last weekend, was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in volleyball on Monday.

Promoted to the starting lineup on Saturday, Viliunas had 49 assists and 14 digs as then-No. 22 Illinois rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat then-No. 25 Michigan State in five sets. The victory halted a season-high four-match losing streak for the Illini (9-9).

Viliunas is the second UI player to receive the league's weekly freshman honor. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Jocelynn Birks, a former high school teammate of Viliunas at LeGrange Lyons, was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week as well as Big Ten Player of the Week on Sept. 17.
