Hambly fills assistant opening

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois volleyball coach Kevin Hambly wasted little time in rounding out his coaching staff with the addition of former volunteer assistant Scott Leserman.

Leserman replaces Dan Conners, who left the Illini in mid-June to become the head women’s coach at UC-Davis.

“Scott is an extremely hard-working, very bright, up-and-coming young coach,” Hambly said in a news release. “The fact that he understands what it means to be a part of the Illini program made him a no-brainer hire. I am very excited to work with him this upcoming season and into the future.”

Leserman was a volunteer assistant on Hambly’s staff during the 2010 season after serving as a team manager for the Illini as a graduate assistant during the 2009 season while he worked on his master’s degree in sport management. Illinois made its third consecutive Sweet 16 appearance as the No. 8 national seed during the 2010 season.

After leaving Illinois following the 2010 season, Leserman spent the 2011 season as an assistant at Loyola in Chicago and was an assistant at Northwestern the past two years. Leserman’s primary focus at Northwestern was opposition scouting and defense, making him a solid replacement for Conners. Before taking the UC-Davis job, Conners coordinated the Illini’s blocking system for two seasons.

Leserman started his coaching career after a four-year playing career at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he was a three-year captain. The Brewers finished second in the 2008 Molten Invitational Tournament — the national championship for Division III men’s volleyball.
