URBANA — University of Illinois trustees could take the rare step of firing a tenured faculty member Friday at a special board meeting in Chicago.

Tamas validates he was right man to lead turnaround

MINNEAPOLIS — A little more than 48 hours passed between the time Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman emailed Chris Tamas to gauge his interest in interviewing for the open Illini volleyball job and the former Big Ten assistant landing his first head coaching job.

Mark Smith switching sides added some juice to what might have been an otherwise dull game. Mizzou is 6-3 but hasn't beaten anyone of substance, and Illinois (3-7) is off to a slow start.

Hambly's move to California good for his family, Stanford program

MINNEAPOLIS — Kevin Hambly had some expectations about Stanford volleyball when he left Illinois for Palo Alto in January 2017.

There was Stanford's long-term status as a national power. The Cardinal had also just won a national championship with several freshmen — including first-team All-American and Freshman of the Year Kathryn Plummer.
