After an emotional Big Ten Conference victory Sunday against Northwestern, the University of Illinois women's soccer team still had plenty left in reserve for its match vs. Division III Aurora University on Tuesday in Champaign.
Freshman Rachel Smith recorded a hat trick and reserves Julie Green and Kim Fogelson added first-half goals as the Illini routed Aurora 10-1.
"It was a great opportunity to get our starters a little bit of rest. It's a nice feeling to hit the back of the net," UI coach Jillian Ellis said.
Illinois, 6-7 overall, 1-6 Big Ten Conference, had 21 shots on goal vs. Aurora, 6-5.
"I really didn't know what to expect. I tell my players to always respect the opponent. Anyone on any day can beat you," Ellis said.
The Illini led 7-0 at halftime before freshman Ashley Gordon increased the UI's cushion to 8-0. Aurora's Chrissy Pluchinsky scored her team's only goal at 54:00 of the second half.
In men's tennis: Illini advance
UI junior Oliver Freelove began singles qualifying play with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory against Kentucky's Johan Hesoun on Tuesday at the ITA All-American Championships in Austin, Texas.
Freelove will play Oklahoma's Adam Neal on Thursday with the winner advancing to the main draw.
In doubles, Illini Jeff Laski and David Treadwell bounced Washington's Robert Kendrick and Sasha Rampazzo 8-4 before losing to Furman's Adam Abney and Sam Schoerluke 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of qualifying.
