UI wrestlers still in the rankings

Sixth-ranked heavyweight Karl Roesler has helped lead Illinois to the No. 7 spot in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's latest team rankings.

The Illini are behind three other Big Ten teams: No. 2 Minnesota, No. 3 Iowa and No. 4 Penn State.

Roesler is the highest-ranked UI wrestler in InterMat's Division I list. Other top-20 Illini: No. 7 Adam Tirapelle at 149 pounds; No. 8 Carl Perry at 141; No. 8 Pat Quirk at 197; No. 9 Steve Doerrer at 125; No. 12 Nate Patrick at 184; and No. 19 David Stoltz at 133.

Sontag on roll.

Illinois senior Gavin Sontag won two more singles matches Thursday at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic to reach the championship match in the consolation bracket.

Sontag (109-49) claimed his fifth consecutive straight-set victory after defeating DePaul's Rory McKinney 6-3, 6-1 and Baylor's Fred Blaise 6-4, 6-4.

Kung falls.

UI sophomore Simone Kung, the fourth seed, lost her quarterfinal match 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 to Rice's Charlotte Feasby at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

Banquet time.

The annual Networkers volleyball awards banquet starts at 6 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Park Inn International and Illini Conference Center in Urbana.

Tickets are $24 for Networkers, $28 for nonmembers and $17 for students, and reservations must be received by Jan. 15. For information, call Jana Waite at 333-3488 days or 351-9386 evenings.
