Vaughn wins NCAA discus title

EUGENE, Ore. — Luke Vaughn never won a state title in the discus during his high school career.

But the former Centennial standout can now call himself an NCAA champion.

The Memphis graduate student won the event late Friday night during the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field with a toss of 198 feet, 2 inches.

Vaughn, a 2013 Centennial graduate, placed fourth in the discus in Class 2A as a senior at the state meet with the Chargers before embarking upon a successful college career with the Tigers. His throw of 198-2 on Friday was almost 5 feet better than what runner-up Greg Thompson (193-5) of Maryland threw. The News-Gazette
