Prep pulse: June 25, 2018

I've used this space previously to discuss our 1,000-point scorers project. And it's time to do so again.

Back in February, I tried to compile a list of former and current high school basketball players who had put up 1,000 points in their prep careers. I quickly received plenty of responses to that effort, and the initial list has grown even longer.

Ever since the initial release date, I've hoped to make this 1,000-point scorers feature something more than just a pile of names. Now is the time to bring that to fruition.

I'm hoping to get in touch with as many of the folks on our 1,000-point scorers list as possible to get them on video talking about what it meant to play basketball for their respective schools.

I've had a few people reach out to me about this already, but I couldn't do much follow-up once the spring sports season got underway. Now that we're in the summertime, when there are no high school sports actively happening, I can spend more attention on this 1,000-point scorers idea.

Whether individuals want to come into our office in downtown Champaign or send in a video they've shot at home, I'm looking for clips of 30 seconds to one minute from all who have netted 1,000 points for an area high school program.

I'd like those folks to briefly discuss what it was like to suit up on the hardwood for their high schools, all the way from Arcola to Westville.

After that, I'll post the clips on our website to be added to as we get both more video submissions and more 1,000-point scorers.

If you're looking for something comparable to what I'm hoping this project will become, look to our University of Illinois 150 Years series.

In that, more than 1,000 Illini alumni have discussed their experience while wearing the orange and blue. Not all of those people have submitted video messages, but there are a good number of folks who have done so. Perhaps we could have even more individuals take part in that for this 1,000-point project.

If you or someone you know is a local 1,000-point high school basketball scorer, reach out to me at to set up a video submission.
