Prep golf storylines to watch: Plethora of area talent has graduated

Preps coordinator Colin Likas offers up four storylines to watch in 2018:

GRADS APLENTY

Three area boys' programs advanced to their respective state tournaments last season, and there was plenty of senior experience on those rosters. In fact, Champaign Central, Monticello and Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin combine to return just five athletes from their 18 total state scorers. Luckily for the Maroons, at least, 2017 All-Area boys' Player of the Year Justin McCoy is among that crop.

YOUNGER VIBE

Meanwhile, 2017's lone area girls' state-qualifying team — St. Thomas More — is returning many of its key parts. Reigning N-G girls' Player of the Year Alaina Bowie and five other scorers on Class 1A's fourth-place club will try to keep the Sabers relevant on the links.

GUYS TO WATCH

Sullivan captured a Class 1A regional crown last year without the courtesy of a scoring senior. Caden Ellis should pace the Redskins again this year. Uni High's Duane Nelson carded medalist honors in 1A regional action last season as well.

GIRLS TO WATCH

Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley used an all-junior lineup to notch third in a Class 1A regional last campaign, with Shannon Spangler leading the charge. Mackenzie McCoy of Champaign Central is the lone returning Class 2A individual state qualifier.
