Urbana and Central change game time

CHAMPAIGN — A Week 4 prep football game between Urbana and Champaign Central will occur Saturday morning instead of Friday night, administrators told The News-Gazette.

The contest will occur at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, instead of the evening of Sept. 14, at Tommy Stewart Field.

Maroons athletic director Jane Stillman said Wednesday night that the change was made “out of an abundance of caution following the recent shooting.”

Stillman was referring to the shooting death of Central student David Sankey on Aug. 28, which led officials to move a football matchup between Central and Centennial from the night of Aug. 31 to the morning of Sept. 1.

Tigers athletic director Steve Waller said Wednesday “the decision was discussed and agreed upon by both schools.”

Maroons coach Tim Turner said Wednesday he wasn’t worried about the effect of a second Saturday morning game on his team, but lamented “the senseless violence” that has caused these two scheduling changes.
