Sabers squeak by Panthers
CHAMPAIGN – St. Thomas More's Taylor Alexander scored the winning run in the eighth inning on a throwing error after walking and stealing second base to propel the Sabers to a 6-5 softball win against Paxton-Buckley-Loda on Tuesday.
Brittany Einck was 2 for 5 with an RBI double for STM (9-5, 3-0 Sangamon Valley Conference). Laura Zasada added three hits for the Sabers.
PBL's Brooke Allen went 2 for 3 with a double.
Pontiac 10, Mahomet-Seymour 2. Allison Gwinup had three hits and Courtney Roberts had two for the host Bulldogs.
Watseka 13, Iroquois West 2. Kloie McCann (three RBI), Erin Cowan (two RBI), Katie Lavoie (three runs) and Laura Krumweide all had two hits for the visiting Warriors, who have won six in a row.
Danville 10, Hoopeston 9. Michaleen Forman and Morgan King each homered for the visiting Vikings.
Prairie Central 4, Eureka 2. Lindsey Krippel's two-run double in the ninth inning provided the winning runs for the visiting Hawks.
South Newton 22, Milford/Cissna Park 16. Anna Lucht went 4 for 4 with two RBI for the host Bearcats.
Blue Ridge 3, Monticello 2. Casey Thomas, Jordyn Fones and Melinda Wilson (triple, RBI) had two hits apiece for the host Knights. Winning pitcher Jordan Wheeler allowed three hits and struck out four.
Rantoul 10, Bloomington Central Catholic 8. Winning pitcher Hanna Mennenga went 4 for 4 for the visiting Eagles.
Rochester 11, Clinton 4. Cale Robinson went 3 for 3 with a triple for the visiting Maroons.
St. Joseph-Ogden 11, Tri-Point 1. Winning pitcher Elizabeth Everingham improved to 4-0 and also had three hits (two triples, double) and drove in four runs for the visiting Spartans. Audra James (three stolen bases), Emily Harms (four RBI) and Abby Immke all had three hits for SJ-O.
Centennial 6, Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Chrisman 5. Kaley Barak went 2 for 4 and drove in the game-winning run in the eighth for the host Chargers.
East Central 15, Arthur-Lovington 10. Spencer Lowe had three hits, including a home run, and four RBI to power the visiting Panthers. John Essig, Justin Bruce and Devon Biggs (four runs) had two hits apiece for East Central. Zach Riley hit a grand slam for the Knights.
St. Joseph-Ogden 11, Tri-Point 0. Christian Clabaugh had three hits, including two doubles, for the visiting Spartans. Jared Orcutt and Austin Griswell (two RBI) each had two hits for SJ-O.
St. Thomas More 15, Paxton-Buckley-Loda 9. Zach Johnson improved to 3-0 on the season, striking out seven for the host Sabers. Tyler Sullivan and Jordan Wellinghoff each roped two doubles for STM, which also got two hits from Will Rudolphi. Brock Johnson hit a two-run homer for the Panthers, who got two hits from Dylan Overstreet.
Central A&M 13, South Piatt 4. Andy Webb and Dylan Clark each had a hit and stole two bases for the host Wildcats.
Bloomington Central Catholic 14, Rantoul 2. Garrett Jones hit an RBI double for the host Eagles.
Hoopeston 7, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 2. Marvin Crawford had two hits and picked up the win on the mound, striking out seven for the visiting Cornjerkers, who got a home run from Tate Compton.
CPCI 14, Clifton Central 8. Kyle Popham (two hits) and Reed Anderson (three hits) each drove in three runs for the visiting Timberwolves.
Watseka 17, Iroquois West 10. Sawyer Harris went 3 for 5 and hit a game-tying grand slam in the sixth inning to spark the visiting Warriors. Hector Reyes homered and drove in four runs for Iroquois West.
In boys' track and field:
At Bismarck. Ian Park won the long jump and triple jump for Bismarck-Henning in the Blue Devils' triangular win against Hoopeston Area and Westville.
At St. Joseph. Brett Winterbottom (300 hurdles, pole vault), Austin Wilson (discus, triple jump) and D.J. Gordon (200 meters, long jump) were all double winners for Monticello in a win against St. Joseph-Ogden.
At Paxton. Jade Ackerman won the 100 and 200 meters and Brandon Noe was a winner in the shot put and discus for St. Thomas More in its win in an eight-team event.
At Arthur. Bobby Aikman (100, 400, high jump) and Jake Mercer (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) were multiple winners for Arthur-Lovington in a quadrangular win.
In girls' track and field:
At Bismarck. Maranda Witty was a double winner in the high jump and 300 hurdles for the Blue Devils in a win against Hoopeston Area.
At. St. Joseph. Rachel Ballard won the 100 meters and the long jump for St. Joseph- Ogden in a win against Monticello.
At Arthur. Katie Davis won the 100, 400 and triple jump for Arthur-Lovington, which finished second to Neoga in a quadrangular.
In girls' soccer
Champaign Central 1, Mahomet-Seymour 0. Sarah Kresca scored an unassisted goal in the first half and Jordan Slade stopped seven shots to lead the host Maroons.
Urbana 1, Urbana University 1. Urbana got a goal from Melinda Mendoza, and Uni's goal came courtesy Sarah Vaughen.
In boys' tennis:
At Normal. Mauricio Gonzalez won at No. 1 singles and won in doubles for Centennial in a 5-4 victory against Normal West.
Akshay Krishnamani, Jake Schilling and Robb Cozad also picked up singles wins.
