Urbana's Johnson, Danville's Janesky come up big in wins
URBANA – Timely offense and a sparkling defensive play for the final out helped Urbana beat Centennial 6-5 on Tuesday night in a Big 12 baseball game.
The Tigers pushed across two runs in the sixth inning then squelched a seventh-inning rally for the win. Backup shortstop Garrett Johnson's barehanded pickup and quick throw of a Centennial ground ball produced the final out.
"If the game had been on ESPN, it would have been a 'Web Gem,' " Urbana coach Steve Waller said of Johnson's play. "One of the best ways I've seen a high school baseball game end."
LaQuan Grein and Bryan Fink had two hits apiece for the Tigers (14-7, 3-3 Big 12).
"It was a great win for us," Waller said. "Centennial is having a great year, just like us. The atmosphere was great, being a night game, and both teams played well. We couldn't ask for a better game."
Urbana scored the go-ahead run on an error following a single by Ben Thompson. He later came around to score on a wild pitch for a 6-4 lead. The Chargers (13-10, 5-5) scored a run in the seventh before Johnson's play ended it.
