Ford, Jackson pace Vikings in Big 12

MATTOON – Cameron Ford posted two of Danville's four wins in the Big 12 Conference boys' track and field meet Thursday.

Ford won the shot put, defeating Centennial's Matt Strack by a half-inch with an effort of 54 feet, 8 1/2 inches. Ford also won the discus with a toss of 163-6.

The Vikings, runners-up in the team standings to Normal Community, also got victories from David Groves (110 high hurdles) and TeJuan Jackson, who upset Champaign Central's defending state champ Ian Wells in the 400 meters. Jackson was timed in 49.10, while Wells stopped the clock in 49.41.

Central's Sam Mate took the pole vault at 14-6.

Centennial was third in the team standings. The Chargers' Emmanuel Richter-Shea finished third in the long jump and broke his own school record with a leap of 23-2 1/4.

In girls' track & field:

At Toledo. Tuscola's Lindsay Troike won the 800 meters (2:26.68) and the 1,600 (5:34.52) at the Class 1A Cumberland Sectional.

Teammate Lisa Ponder (12:48.88) finished second in the 3,200 to advance to the state meet.

Arthur-Lovington's Katie Davis jumped 33-6 1/2 to win the triple jump. Sullivan-Okaw Valley, runner-up in the team standings to Central A&M, got a victory from Olivia Herzog (42-6) in the shot put. Herzog also advanced in the discus, eclipsing the qualifying standard with an effort of 116-9 1/2 while placing third.

Sullivan-Okaw Valley's Paige Neuhauser advanced after finishing second in the 200.

In soccer:

Centennial 2, Mount Zion 0. Annie Regan and Hannah Radnitzer scored for the Chargers, who improved to 17-4 with the road win.

In baseball:

Monticello 13, Clinton 8. Eric Oles' three hits and three RBI propelled the host Sages (15-12). Winning pitcher Jordan Latsko homered.

Salt Fork 15, Westville 4. The host Storm scored in five of its six at-bats. Joel Learnard (six RBI) homered twice and Trever Hallett (three RBI) also homered. Mat Bowen knocked in three. Andy Dugas led the Tigers with three hits.

Watseka 9, Tri-Point 0. Todd Lyznicki pitched a five-hitter and slugged a homer for the visiting Warriors. Lyznicki drove in three runs. Sawyer Harris and John Braden homered for Watseka.

Urbana 13, Mattoon 8. The visiting Tigers used an eight-run fourth inning to get the victory. LaQuan Grein (three hits, three RBI) and Cody Randolph (three hits) did the most damage. Ben Thompson and Trey Russell each collected two hits and two RBI.

Hoopeston Area 10, Milford 5. Wes Rush homered and drove in three runs to spark the Cornjerkers' home win. Kyle Hufford scattered five hits in a complete-game effort, striking out seven.

Danville 4, Central 3. The Vikings (16-9) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, capped by Ryne Watson's game-winning hit. Chuckie Robinson (RBI double), Blake Janesky (RBI single) and Dennis Forrest (RBI single) also had key hits in the rally.

St. Thomas More 23, St. Joseph-Ogden 5. The host Sabers scored 14 runs before the first out in the first inning. Jason Herzog, Parker Stewart and Sean Heffernan each hit three-run homers. Zach Johnson doubled twice and earned the victory (eight strikeouts) to move to 7-1. The Sabers (24-5) set a school record for wins in a season.

Heart of Illinois tournament. Jesse Brucker's three hits powered Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley to a 5-4 victory against Deer Creek-Mackinaw in Bloomington.

In softball:

Rantoul 10, Paris 0. Hanna Mennenga tossed a no-hitter and struck out 15 at home. The Eagles (14-14) got two homers from Kelsey Gass, who went 4 for 4.

Danville 14, Central 4. McKenzie Hodges earned the victory for the visiting Vikings. Monica Rondon had three hits for the Maroons.

Milford 7, Hoopeston Area 4. Anna Lucht homered and Ashlen Portwood chipped in with two doubles and two RBI for the host Bearcats.

South Piatt 24, Cerro Gordo 1. Winning pitcher Shelby Lust pitched a one-hitter to power visiting South Piatt. Lust struck out 14 and walked two.
