Belmont provides spark for Illineks

HERSCHER – Erika Belmont scored goals in each half as Urbana University High beat Reed-Custer 4-0 in a Class 1A girls' soccer regional semifinal Saturday. Belmont, padding her team-high goals total to 11, gave Uni High the lead for good on a penalty kick.

Eunjung Kim made seven saves for the second-seeded Illineks, who move on to meet top-seeded Herscher.

Michelle Wong added a goal and an assist for Uni High (12-3-3), which got a goal from Katherine Buzard.

Rochester 7, Monticello 0. Colleen Donohue made seven saves for the Sages (8-8-2) in a Class 1A regional semifinal. Monticello fell behind 5-0 in the first half.

Danville 1, Urbana 0. Emma Peck scored off a free kick with 21:37 left in the first half to lift the Vikings in a Class 2A regional opener.

In tennis:

Big 12 meet. Centennial's Mauricio Gonzalez won the No. 1 singles title as the Chargers placed fourth as a team.

Third-place Danville was led by Ashish Patel's second-place finish at No. 2 singles.

"We were probably on paper looking at sixth (place)," Danville coach Scott Simpson said. "Third was nice for us."

Champaign Central's Ryan Smith won the No. 6 singles title.

In softball:

M-S 9-5, Peoria Notre Dame 4-3. A broken arm kept senior Brittany Nelson on the sidelines until Saturday. She made the most of her return on Senior Day, scoring four times as the Bulldogs swept.

Fellow seniors Allison Gwinup and Courtney Roberts also celebrated in style. Gwinup had four stolen bases and four hits on the day, and Roberts went 2 for 2 with a double in Game 1.

Alie Tarrant was 2 for 4 in the opener and homered with three RBI in Game 2. Kendyl Cummins was 2 for 3 in Game 1, and Nicole Smith was 2 for 3 in Game 2.

SJ-O 11, W-L 1. Stephanie Canfield set a school record for single-season hits for host St. Joseph-Ogden (31-3). Canfield had three hits to raise her total to 80, topping Lindsey Barron's mark of 78 set in 2008.

Elizabeth Everingham had three hits and two RBI for the Spartans, who got eight strikeouts from winning pitcher Jenna Slifer.

Urbana 12-15, Eisenhower 1-12. Mariah Burgess had three hits and three RBI in Game 1 for the Tigers, who got three hits from Kelsey Tatman. Jasmine White was 3 for 3 with two RBI in Game 2.

MacArthur 6-7, Centennial 0-5. Jamie Cutright had two hits for the Chargers in Game 2.

Pontiac tournament. Jessica Moreman had three hits, including a key bases-loaded double, as Schlarman beat Pontiac 8-6 in the championship game. Lynzie Fields scored three times.

Moreman homered and scored twice and Kylee West pitched a complete game for the Hilltoppers in a 7-3 win against Lincoln. Moreman finished the day 4 for 5, reaching base in all six at-bats.

HOIC tournamemt. Lindsey Williams (two RBI), Kalli Gosser and Amanda Cain each had three hits in Fisher's 6-5 win against Ridgeview in a Heart of Illinois Conference tournament game.

Bloomington 11-11, Central 0-0. Monica Rondon had two hits in each game for the Maroons, who got two hits from Jamie Anastasia in Game 2.

In baseball:

Unity 1, Sullivan 0. Tyler Bialeschki pitched a two-hitter and drove in Cole Craft with a two-out sixth-inning single for the host Rockets (23-6, 7-4 Okaw Valley). Bialeschki had nine strikeouts. "He did a real nice job," Unity coach Dan Cunningham said.

Tuscola 6, Monticello 3. Cody Shelmadine, Matt Pflum and Tyler Clark (two RBI) each had two hits and TJ Onstott homered for the host Warriors. Jordan Latsko and Mitch Milton each had two hits for the Sages.

East Central 12, Cerro Gordo 0. Travis Hawkins and John Essig (two RBI) each went 3 for 4 and Colten Allen and Tyler Sanderson added two hits and three RBI apiece for the Panthers (21-13 overall, 10-5 Little Okaw Valley).

Centennial 7-9, MacArthur 6-10. Jake Flessner went 2 for 3 and had the game-winning hit in the seventh inning for the host Chargers in the opener. Trey Ballard tripled and had two RBI.

In Game 2, Michael Walker had three hits and Dylan Hast (three RBI), Flessner and Cory Weber each had two hits.

Eisenhower 7-6, Urbana 5-13. Trey Russell had four hits and four RBI and Cody Randolph added three hits and two RBI for the Tigers (17-12) in Game 2. In the Big 12 opener, Larry Green (two RBI), LaQuan Grein (two RBI) and Nick Thompson each had two hits for Urbana.

Central 13-4, Bloomington 3-12. Reggie Walker had four hits and Braden Anderson pitched a complete game for the visiting Maroons in their Big 12 opener. Anderson had two hits and Doug Kyrouac had two hits and two RBI.

In Game 2, Clinton Miller had two hits, including a home run, for Central (18-15).

Normal West 6-6, Danville 4-2. Chuckie Robinson had three hits, Blake Janesky had two and Drew Guthrie homered, but the Vikings squandered a 4-0 lead in Game 1 as Normal West clinched its third consecutive Big 12 title.

Dalton Allison had two hits in Game 2 for Danville.

HOIC tournament. Stephan Birt and Tyler Eads each had two hits and two RBI as Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley beat LeRoy 9-0 to win the HOIC tournament. Tyler Buhs had two hits for the Falcons, who got a three-hitter from Eads.

Birt, Buhs and Austin Borton had two hits and RBI as the Falcons beat Tremont 11-2 to reach the title game.

Hoopeston Area 3-1, PBL 1-10. David Stephens' strong pitching and a three-run seventh inning lifted visiting Hoopeston Area in Game 1.

Andy Fairchild (11-1) had eight strikeouts in a complete-game three-hitter to spark Paxton-Buckley-Loda in Game 2.

At Grant Park. Tyler Myers homered and Terry Deaville pitched a two-hitter as Rantoul beat Grant Park 7-0 in round-robin play. Cody Flowers, Chris Broadway and Devin Smith each had two hits.

Rantoul beat CPCI 8-2 as Smith's two-run double in the seventh broke open a tight game. Deaville, Ryne Worthington, Myers and Keegan Stewart each had two hits.

Watseka 6-14, Milford 2-4. Sawyer Harris had two hits and Zach Guenette homered for Watseka in Game 1. Brede Parker was 4 for 4 with four RBI in Game 2, and Tanner Harris and John Braden each added two hits.

In track:

At Mahomet. Mahomet-Seymour won the 400 relay to spark its first-place team finish at the Bulldog Invitational. Eli Johnson was second in the 800 and Derek Bunch was second in the discus and third in the shot put for the Bulldogs.

Area winners included Georgetown-Ridge Farm's Devon Darnell (110 hurdles, high jump), St. Thomas More's Jade Ackerman (100, 200), St. Thomas More's Brandon Noe (shot put, discus), St. Joseph-Ogden's Zeke Elkins (800), Prairie Central's Stirling Sommer (400), Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley's Cody Gaesser (300 hurdles), SJ-O's Thomas Jean (pole vault) and Judah Christian's Malik Williams (long jump).
