Saturday's prep highlights: Walsh powers Tuscola
At Tuscola. NOLAN WALSH hit a grand slam and drove in six runs as Tuscola outslugged Salt Fork 11-7 at the Warriors' tournament. CODY SHELMADINE homered in the win and added two hits in the Warriors' 10-7 loss against Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley. Salt Fork got homers from MAT BOWEN, JOEL LEARNARD and COLE TAYLOR. DAVID KEENAN homered twice and RYAN ANDERSON had a grand slam in Salt Fork's 14-4 win against GCMS.
At Urbana. CORD CHURCH had three hits and JESSE REMINGTON drove in three runs as Rantoul beat Westville 16-0 in the Urbana tournament. The unbeaten Eagles also defeated Urbana 12-2 behind Church's three hits, including a solo homer. CHRIS DEAVILLE added three RBI. Urbana defeated Westville 11-10 as DYLAN ANDERSON collected two doubles and three RBI. Westville got homers from KYLE BRAZAS and TYLER DICKEN.
At Hume. JUSTIN BRUCE drove in three runs as East Central defeated Champaign Central 13-4 in the Panthers' wooden bat tournament. KURTIS BROWN had two hits and two RBI in Central's 15-6 loss to Cumberland. AUSTIN TOLER's three hits and four RBI lifted Bismarck-Henning past East Central 14-0.
At Clinton. ALEX WOOD had three hits and four RBI as Sullivan beat Clinton 11-8 in the title game of the Maroons' tournament. Clinton beat LeRoy 10-5 behind three hits from CALE ROBINSON.
Hoopeston Area 8-4, Watseka 2-18. CODY INMAN had two hits and two RBI in the opener, which featured 11 strikeouts by winning pitcher MARVIN CRAWFORD. In the second game, TODD LYZNICKI (five hits, four RBI) and BREDE PARKER (three hits, three RBI, homer) powered the Warriors.
St. Thomas More 14-8, Ridgeview 2-5. STORM JOOP went 3 for 3 with three RBI as the Sabers completed a doubleheader sweep. JULIAN BOSWELL added three hits. MICHAEL PLECKI had three hits and was the winning pitcher in the opener.
Prairie Central 6-8, Tri-Valley 2-7. TRENT BOUNDS had two hits in the opener and added three more in the second game to propel the Hawks.
Mahomet-Seymour 17-14, Rochester 7-4. ALEX SMITH had three doubles in the opener, and JASON ZIEGLER and LYLE BURNS homered in the second game for M-S.
Unity 6-5, Marshall 3-8. TYLER BIALESCHKI had two hits and two RBI in the Rockets' Game 1 win. MITCH NEGANGARD homered in the second game.
Centennial 11-15, Springfield Lanphier 5-5. ANDREW ALVES and TYLER NAMOFF homered in the opener. TREY BALLARD (three hits, five RBI) slugged a homer in the nightcap.
St. Thomas More 5, Centennial 4. TRAVIS TRESSLER (No. 1), BRIAN FALLON (No. 2) and SEAN MONAHAN (No. 5) collected singles wins to lead the Sabers.
At Edwardsville. TYLER ELLIS and MATT KIDWELL each finished 4-1 as Danville placed 16th in the 32-team Edwardsville invitational.
Centennial 9, Decatur MacArthur 0. DAGNY OLSON had four goals and an assist to lead the Chargers. KATELYNN MARTINEZ scored twice.
Herscher 1, Mahomet-Seymour 0. The Tigers scored on a penalty kick in the first half.
Urbana 1, Danville 0. The Tigers (2-1) scored in the second half on MELINDA MENDOZA's goal. Keeper CHRISTIANA STARK made seven saves.
Urbana Uni 4, Normal Calvary Baptist 1. ABIGAIL RADNITZER scored twice and CHRISTINA GRATTON collected three assists for the Illineks (2-2-1).
Athens 4, St. Thomas More 1. The Sabers (2-3) scored in the third minute on CORINNE KENNEDY's goal from ASHLEY COX.
At Catlin. BROOKE ALLEN slugged a three-run walkoff homer as Paxton-Buckley-Loda beat Heritage 7-5 in the title game of Salt Fork's tournament.
At Rantoul. St. Joseph-Ogden beat Centennial 15-1, Bradley-Bourbonnais 7-4 and Pontiac 15-3 to win the Rantoul tournament. ELIZABETH EVERINGHAM struck out 15 in the win against B-B, and HANNAH BOWEN had three hits and seven RBI against Pontiac.
At Champaign. JESSICA MACK had three hits and four RBI to lead Urbana to a 20-3 victory against Champaign Central in the third-place game of the Maroons' tournament. ELLEN BEVERLY had an inside-the-park home run. Mahomet-Seymour beat Central 20-0 behind ALISON TARRANT's three hits and four RBI.
At Petersburg. Clinton finished 1-2 at the Petersburg PORTA tournament, defeating Illini West 9-6 as EMILY KROEGER, MORGAN HICKMAN and ALICIA MITCHELL collected two hits apiece.
Blue Ridge 4, Argenta-Oreana 1. MARCIE CRAWFORD's one-hitter sparked the Knights, who got two RBI apiece from JAMISON BRANDT and JORDYN FONES.
Donovan 17-5, Watseka 0-12. KAT GRIMES went 3 for 4 with four RBI and Watseka coach BARRY BAUER earned his 100th career win in the second game.
Unity 12, Fisher 6. RACHAEL BILLMAN had four hits and knocked in five for the Rockets (6-2). TAYLOR STARK added three hits. KALLI GOSSER had three hits, including a homer, to lead the Bunnies.
Schlarman 10-10, St. Thomas More 0-0. CHELSEA WILLIS had three hits and three RBI for the Hilltoppers in the first game. BRITTANY HAY had seven hits in the doubleheader. RANDI COOKUS opened the second game with a home run and added two more hits. Willis drove in five.
Track & field
Sabers win county crown. KATHRYN BOYER won the 800-meter run and THERESA WELLE took the 1,600 to lead St. Thomas More to a narrow victory in the Champaign County meet. The Sabers, who also won the 3,200 relay, finished with 123.5 points, edging St. Joseph-Ogden (123). Urbana (115.5) was third. The Spartans got victories from RACHEL BALLARD (200, long jump), CHELSEA BLAASE (3,200), LEXXI THOMPSON (triple jump) and their 800 and 1,600 relays.
At East St. Louis. J'LYNN AYERS broke the school record with a shot put of 41 feet, 11 inches as Danville placed ninth in the 24-team relay meet at East St. Louis. Ayers finished second. MANDISA DANTZLER was third in the triple jump at 34-10.
