Schlarman baseball rallies

DANVILLE — Schlarman coach Jason Woodworth wasn't in the best of moods when his team fell behind Tuscola 7-0 in Friday's Class 1A sectional semifinal at Danville Stadium.

"I was down and disappointed in the way things were going," he said. "But I knew we could find a way to come back."

Getting clutch performances from his three seniors (six hits, five RBI), Woodworth was all smiles after the Hilltoppers rallied for a 10-7 win. They'll play the winner of this morning's game between Argenta-Oreana and Meridian at 2:30 p.m. for the sectional title.

"We kept chipping away and chipping away," Woodworth said. "Any win this time of year is a momentum builder, but to come from seven runs down ..."

Matt Chamberlain and Adam Pellegrini (2 for 4, three RBI) keyed a four-run sixth inning, Chamberlain driving home the go-ahead run with a double. Brock Drews was 3 for 4.

Tuscola's Cody Shelmadine hit a three-run homer and Dillon Hoel was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Streator Woodland 4, Iroquois West 3. Keaton Zirkle had two hits and Clayton Fink had two RBI for the Raiders, who scored three runs in their last at-bat at Putnam County.

In Class 3A baseball:

Mahomet-Seymour 5, Pontiac 4. Dalton Kearns homered in the sixth and started a relay that gunned down the potential game-tying run for the final out in the seventh for the host Bulldogs.

With the bases loaded and two outs, a single drew Pontiac within 5-4. But on the play, the runner from second tried to score. Andrew Lawson took Kearns' throw and whipped it to catcher Alex Smith, who made the tag.

"The kids were ecstatic," M-S coach Nic DiFilippo. "They were excited about the win."

Brad Herrmann also homered and Cully Day was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

"All those guys who stepped up are sophomores," DiFilippo said. "They carried us tonight."

Senior starter Jason Ziegler also pitched in, going the distance.

Springfield Southeast 6, Centennial 4. At Mount Zion, Cully Wilson was 2 for 4 for the Chargers, who finished 18-16.

In Class 2A softball:

Olympia 14, Bismarck-Henning 2. Kelsey Schmidt had a two-run home run and four RBI to lift the top-ranked Spartans. Frankie Shoaf had two hits for the Blue Devils.

In tennis:

Illineks make long run. The Urbana Uni High doubles team of Alex Mestre and Edo Roth won three matches before falling in the sixth round of consolations at Arlington Heights. Champaign Central's Austin Aten went 1-1 to bow out.
