Tuscola teams have reason to celebrate
DANVILLE — Saturday was "a pretty nice day to be a Warrior," Tuscola baseball coach Duff Hoel said.
Not only did Hoel's team defeat Schlarman 7-6 in 11 innings in a Class 1A sectional title game but the Warriors' softball team rallied in the bottom of the seventh to edge Cumberland 2-1 in a Class 1A sectional title game in Buffalo and the boys' track and field team won a state title in the 800-meter relay in Charleston.
And, for good measure, the school had its graduation Saturday night.
Freshman baseball player Tommy Watson, who went 2 for 5, delivered a key hit and drove in two runs.
"He understands the game," Hoel said of Watson. "He is one of the guys who listens to what we teach him."
The Warriors are scheduled to play Tremont at 1 p.m. Monday at Illinois Field in a super-sectional game.
"This is for the kids. It isn't about me. They appreciate all the hard work that they've done," Hoel said.
In the softball victory, Erin Walker struck out seven and Carman Comerford doubled.
Tuscola is scheduled to play Dwight at 1 p.m. Monday at Eichelberger Field.
In state tennis:
Illineks bow out. Urbana Uni High's Alex Mestre and Edo Roth reached the consolation bracket semifinals before bowing out of the state tournament. In the quarters, Mestre and Roth won 7-5, 6-2. They lost 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals.
