Danville's Robinson to play for Southern Miss

DANVILLE — Area Baseball Player of the Year Chuckie Robinson, a senior catcher at Danville High School, gave an oral commitment to Southern Mississippi last week.

His decision came three days after he visited the school in Hattiesburg, Miss. Last spring as a junior, Robinson batted .412 for the Vikings, stole 14 bases and hit five home runs, leading the 22-15 team to the Elite Eight in Class 3A.

Robinson was called “the best defensive catcher in the area,” by Vikings coach Gary Gritton.

“I had a few more (college) visits left, but I was comfortable enough I knew that was where I wanted to go,” Robinson said. “The atmosphere was what got me. It was like a homey feeling.”

The baseball is good, too.

“They’ve developed good ballplayers in the past, and I know they will push me,” Robinson said.

Robinson expects to sign a letter of intent about Nov. 14. He plans on majoring in business or sports management.

Southern Mississippi, which has an enrollment of 17,254, had a 32-24 record last year and was an NCAA qualifier in 2011.
