Thursday's prep highlights: Finke earns all-state honors

MOLINE — Centennial basketball player Michael Finke was selected to The Associated Press all-state first team in Class 3A.

The all-state team, voted on by a statewide panel of sports writers and broadcasters, was announced Thursday.

Denzel Smith of Danville was an honorable mention choice in Class 4A.

Vikings’ McGuire on target. Devyn McGuire of Danville advanced to the final four of the Class 4A three-point shooting contest Thursday at Carver Arena in Peoria. The Vikings senior made 10 out of 15 attempts in the preliminary round before hitting 6 of 10 in a playoff to reach Friday’s finals.

In baseball

Central rolls in opener. Connor Mapes had three hits and two RBI and scored twice to lead Champaign Central to a season-opening 9-2 baseball victory against visiting East Central on Thursday. Winning pitcher Scott Runyan and three relievers combined for a two-hitter.

In girls' soccer

Brinkoetter connects. St. Thomas More defeated visiting Monticello 5-1 in girls’ soccer behind Jade Brinkoetter’s two goals and two assists. Katie Kulas also had two goals for the Sabers.
