Saturday's prep highlights: Leverenz shines at Gene Armer

In track & field

■ At Champaign. Johnny Leverenz won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs to lead Danville to third place in the 33-team Gene Armer Invitational boys’ meet at the University of Illinois Armory. Leverenz set school and meet records in the 3,200 with a time of 9 minutes, 16.77 seconds. The previous school mark of 9:20.1 by Jerry George had stood since 1973. Matthew Knipfer of St. Joseph-Ogden won the pole vault by 6 inches by clearing 13 feet, 6 inches.
Danville finished fourth in the 41-team girls’ meet behind third-place finishes by Emone Davis (60 meters), Aariona Graham (long jump) and its 800 relay unit of Desi Isaac, Graham, Ambrosia Williams and Davis. Mercedes Porter of Rantoul finished third in the triple jump.

■ At Charleston. Unity’s Jayden Kaiser (55 meters) and Tuscola’s Stephen Gibson (shot put) won events at the Charleston Invitational boys’ meet at Lantz Field House. Second-place finishers included Argenta-Oreana’s Austin Wenskunas (55 meters and long jump), Salt Fork’s Taylor Kirby (55 hurdles) and Urbana University High’s 3,200 relay. Unity placed second in the 35-team standings and PBL was third.

In baseball

■ Westville 3, Paris 2. Austin Milholland had three hits and an RBI to back the complete-game pitching of Dillon Turner for the Tigers in a home win.

■ Urbana 9, Kankakee 5. Kiel King went 2 for 4 with three RBI and Cameron Ford pitched three scoreless innings in relief to lead the Tigers to a home victory. Tanner Russell was 2 for 4 with a double for Urbana.

■ Heyworth 8, Clinton 0. The Maroons were held hitless in a home loss.

■ Unity 12, Iroquois West 8. The Rockets broke an 8-8 tie with three runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat the visiting Raiders. Taylor White (three runs), Zach Spencer and Mitchell Snodgrass each had two hits for Unity (3-0). Trenton Miller went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI for IW.

■ Cobden 2, Tuscola 1. The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth but couldn’t hold on.

■ Shawnee 4, Tuscola 1. Tristan Williams went 2 for 2 for the Warriors, who committed five errors in a loss at Wolf Lake.

■ Hoopeston Area 6-2, Blue Ridge 4-14. Aiden Berg homered, doubled and drove in four runs for the host Cornjerkers in a Game 1 victory. Issac Trotter (two doubles) and Clint O’Neal each had two hits to lead the Knights to a win in the nightcap.

■ PBL 3-8, Ridgeview 2-6. Axl Denault’s two-out, two-run hit in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the host Panthers to a Game 1 win. In the nightcap, PBL built an 8-1 lead through three innings en route to completing a sweep.

In softball

■ Cerro Gordo/Bement 6-7, LeRoy 5-11. Stephanie Shook went 3 for 4 with a double and two stolen bases for host CB/Bement in Game 1. In the nightcap, Alyssa Aupperle homered twice and drove in four runs for LeRoy.

■ Munford (Tenn.) 9-17, Mahomet-Seymour 3-3. London Acree went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the visiting Bulldogs in the opening loss. In the second game, M-S took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but later allowed a pair of seven-run innings in a five-inning defeat. Lucy Stahl of the Bulldogs drove in two runs in the nightcap.
