Friday's prep highlights: Smith, Ponder sparkle
In boys’ track & field
■ At Monticello. Tuscola’s Broc Smith won the 200-meter dash (22.89 seconds). Smith finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.48) behind Salt Fork’s Nick Hedges (11.43).
Eric Ponder won two events for the Warriors: the 1,600-meter run (4 minutes, 41.76 seconds) and the 3,200-meter run (9:31.68).
Tuscola’s Stephen Gibson won the shot put (49 feet, 4 inches). PBL won the 4x100-meter relay (44.62) and the 4x200-meter relay (1:33.89). Monticello won the 4x400-meter relay (3:33.61). Josh Burton placed first in the long jump for the Sages (20-4.75).
In girls’ track & field
■ At Tolono. Champaign Central’s Sharon Mainor placed second in the 200-meter dash (26.07).
■ Monticello 6, Unity 0. Daniel Caldwell struck out 14 and allowed three hits in a complete-game shutout for the visiting Sages. Ryne Bundy had an RBI and scored two runs. Jacob Burton had two hits and scored two
■ Cerro Gordo/Bement 12, Arcola 2. The Broncos scored nine runs in the first two innings. Seth Still had seven strikeouts for Arcola. Still was 2 for 3. Justin Kuhns, Devin Warren, Robert Hill and Blake Lindenmeyer had one hit apiece.
■ Salt Fork 15, Bismarck-Henning 0. Cole Taylor had nine strikeouts in a one-hit shutout for Salt Fork. Ross Learnard had three hits and three RBI. Max Stutsman had three hits. Garrett McFadden and Lane Weston had two hits apiece. Michael Feeney had one hit for B-H.
■ Shelbyville 5, Tuscola 2. Devin Rose had five strikeouts and allowed three hits in six innings for the Warriors.
■ Danville 14, Westville 8. Alissa Peelman got her fourth win of the season for the Vikings. Peelman was 3 for 5 with two home runs and eight RBI. Lindsey Loewenstein was 3 for 5 with a home run. Katy Aguirre, Megan Cox and Kennedy Richards had two hits apiece. Morgan Gallion had a hit, two RBI and two runs for the Tigers.
■ Salt Fork 7, Bismarck-Henning 6. Salt Fork scored seven runs in the first two innings. Logan Sanford and Camaryn Todd had two RBI apiece for the Storm. Lindsey Andrews was 4 for 4 with two RBI for B-H. Lanie Andrews had two doubles and an RBI.
■ Tremont 5, Blue Ridge 1. Morgan Woliung had two strikeouts and allowed one earned run for Blue Ridge.
