Saturday's prep highlights: STM's McCoy in Team USA mix

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Tori McCoy, a rising junior-to-be at St. Thomas More, has survived the first two cuts while trying out for the USA women’s basketball under-17 national team.

The tryout brought 145 invited competitors to the event at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. McCoy, an All-Area first-teamer, was one of 70 still seeking roster spots Saturday night.

She suffered a bruised shin Friday but returned to full action a day later.

The 6-foot-4 McCoy is less than a month from her 16th birthday. More than 80 percent of the athletes in attendance are a year older than McCoy. Two more workouts will be held Sunday, and the team will be announced Monday.

The 12 players selected for the team will travel to the Czech Republic for the 16-country world championships, which begin June 28.

Chargers softball wins twice. The Centennial softball team beat Springfield Lanphier 8-1 and 12-2 in a doubleheader Saturday. Danielle Staske struck out 17 in the first game and Katie Brown went 2 for 3 with two RBI in the second game for the Chargers.

Centennial baseball splits. The Centennial baseball team beat Freeport 11-1 before losing 4-3 to Metamora on Saturday. Luke Smith struck out 10 and had two RBI in the win against Freeport, while Dylan Grady rapped out two hits and an RBI against Metamora.

Danville falls at Charleston. Brady Watkins went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs, but the Danville baseball team suffered a 13-12 loss Saturday at Charleston.
