Top of the Morning, Dec. 16, 2017

On Saturdays, we'll introduce additions to the growing newsroom at News-Gazette Media. Today: Prep sports coordinator Colin Likas.

COLIN LIKAS spent three years helping design and edit our nationally recognized sports section. But his goal out of Butler University was to write, calling it "a passion of mine."

So the 25-year-old left us in May and wound up at the Dubois County Herald in Jasper, Ind., where he quickly showcased his skills as a reporter with a knack for social media. That experience served as a springboard for his new role: prep sports coordinator at the place where he started his journalism career.

Back at The N-G since early December, Likas already has put his stamp on the way we cover high school sports. You can see it in these pages, at news-gazette.com and certainly on Twitter (@clikasNG), where his relentless and creative approach is playing well with readers of all ages. If you were following him on Friday night, you saw a Tuscola basketball player bank in a shot from well behind halfcourt.

"I try to make sure every one of our constituents is spoken for (on Twitter), no matter if you're from a big school or small school," Likas said.

In his first stint, Likas helped produce our popular "Helmet Stickers" video after Friday night football games. He's back in the video business with "Best of the Bunch" on Mondays — with plenty more to come.

"Having worked here made it a lot easier right off the bat because I know all the schools and a lot of the coaches and players," he said. "I came in with an idea of what people want to know about."
