Catching up with ex-area standouts in pro baseball

MAJOR LEAGUES

OF Kevin Kiermaier, ex-Parkland, Rays

Since his return from spending most of the season on the disabled list (thumb), Kiermaier is struggling at the plate, hiting just .141 with an OPS of .470. Currently he is listed as day-to-day with back tightness.

RHP Tanner Roark, ex-Illini, Nationals

Roark suffered his National League-leading 11th loss Sunday, lasting less than five innings for the third time in his last five starts. Since June 1, oppposing hitters have a .352/.423/.566 slash stat line against the right-hander.

RHP Dan Winkler, ex-Parkland, Braves

In his first full major-league season, Winkler has found success in the bullpen as a seventh/eighth inning setup man. The ex-Cobra has 16 holds and limits hitters to a .182 batting average in high-leverage situations.

MINOR LEAGUES

Class AAA

RHP James Naile, ex-Parkland, Nashville (Athletics)

Naile has made 17 starts for the Sounds this season, sporting a 5-8 record with a 4.30 ERA. He was recently selected to the PCL All-Star Team that will face the International League All-Stars on Wednesday.

RHP Nick Wittgren, ex-Parkland, New Orleans (Marlins)

Miami optioned Wittgren to New Orleans on June 28, just six days after his return from a stint on the disabled list with a finger contusion. He has pitched 21 / 3 scoreless innings in his last two appearances.

Class AA

C Jason Goldstein, ex-Illini, Midland (Athletics)

Goldstein has spent much of the season as a backup catcher at Stockton at the Class A Advanced-Level where he hit .300 with five doubles in 14 games. He was called up to AA Stockton as an injury replacement on Monday.

LHP Tyler Jay, ex-Illini,Chattanooga (Twins)

Jay has settled into a late-inning reliever role, making 21 appearances for the Lookouts. He is 2-1 on the season with a 3.18 ERA, including a win in his last outing against Birmingham on July 7.

Class A

INF Pat McInerney, ex-Illini, Carolina (Brewers)

McInerney started the season with Wisconsin in the Midwest League, then was promoted to Carolina on June 21. On Sunday he broke a five-game hitless streak with an RBI single.

C Chuckie Robinson, ex-Danville, Buies Creek (Astros)

The ex-Viking has made 49 appearances behind the plate for the Carolina League leaders, hitting .194 with three homers and 12 RBI. Robinson has thrown out 62.5 percent of attempted steals.

SS Adam Walton, ex-Illini, Visalia (Diamondbacks)

In 41 appearances at the Class A Advanced-Level, Walton is hitting .276 with a .738 OPS. Over his last 10 games Walton is hitting .303 with six RBI.

RHP Cody Sedlock, ex-Illini, Fredrick (Orioles)

The former first-round pick was placed on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain on April 20 with no timetable set for his return.

Class A Short-Season

OF Doran Turchin, ex-Illini, Aberdeen (Orioles)

Turchin has appeared in 19 of the IronBirds' first 23 games. Eight of his 13 hits have been for extra bases, including two home runs to go with 10 RBI.

Rookie

C Jordyn Muffley, ex-Parkland, Princeton (Rays)

Used mostly in a backup role, Muffley is hitting .136 in seven games. He has committed only one error and has a .977 fielding percentage.

OF Bren Spillane, ex-Illini, Billings (Reds)

Spillane has made the transition to a full-time outfield role since his assignment. In 17 appearances, Spillane has a slash stat line of .250/.403/.882.

INF Cole Taylor, ex-Salt Fork, ex-Parkland, Orem (Angels)

In his first 11 games at the professional level, Taylor is 7 for 32 with an .842 OPS. He hit his first home run of the season last Monday against Grand Junction.

RHP Brady Schanuel, ex-Parkland, Helena (Brewers)

The former Parkland right-hander has been hit hard in his five relief appearances for the Brewers rookie team, giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs in seven innings.

RHP Luke Shilling, ex-Illini, AZL White Sox

Shilling suffered a season-ending injury before he made his first professional appearance. He successfully underwent surgery to reattach a torn right latissimus dorsi muscle.

INDEPENDENT

OF Will Krug, ex-Illini, Windy City (Frontier League)

In his second season with the Thunderbolts, Krug is hitting .259 with six stolen bases. Over his last five games Krug is hitting .429.

INF David Kerian, ex-Illini, Sioux City (American Association)

Kerian is hitting .286 but has not been in the lineup since June 26.

LHP Jesse Remington, ex-Rantoul, Bakersfield (Pecos League)

The left-hander has made nine starts for the Train Robbers, sporting a 4-2 record and 3.78 ERA in 521 / 3 innings. Remington is the staff leader with 42 strikeouts.

JAPAN

Nippon Professional Baseball Organization

RHP Spencer Patton, ex-Parkland, Yokohama DeNA

Patton has made 28 appearances for the Baystars with a 3-0 record 261 / 3 innings. His 17 holds are second in the Nippon League Central Division.
