Wednesday's prep highlights: Maroons blank Illineks

In baseball

Bismark-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 4, Fisher 0. Dawson Dodd kept Fisher's hitters off balance, scaterring three hits across seven shutout innings. Dodd didn't stop there, though, going 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored. Chase Rademacher also went 2 for 3, including a double, in the Blue Devils' home win, while Ethan Edwards had two RBI and Kaj Stanford drove in a run for BHRA (2-1). Dylan Baker, Hunter Coon and Tyler Martin each had a hit for the Bunnies (0-1).

Blue Ridge 5, Armstrong-Potomac 3. The host Knights used a four-run third inning to take control and then hold on for a nonconference win in the season opener for both programs. Keegan Lyle and Jacob Mozingo each had two RBI for Blue Ridge (1-0), while teammates Zach Stephens and Aaron Jayne each had two hits. Mozingo struck out 16 in earning the win on the mound. Rylee Showalter posted two hits, including a double, and an RBI for the Trojans (0-1).

In softball

Blue Ridge 10, Armstrong-Potomac 5. In the season opener for both teams, the host Knights collected the nonconference win. Lexi Young hit a three-run double to spark Blue Ridge's offense, while Avery Place picked up the win in relief, striking out five in 3 2 / 3 innings for the Knights (1-0). Denley Heller (two hits) and Natalie Schluter (two RBI) led A-P (0-1).

LeRoy 14, Heritage 0. The Panthers took a quick 8-0 lead after two innings and never let up en route to a five-inning win. Hailie Hahn threw a two-hit shutout and struck out eight for LeRoy in a nonconference game played on the turf field at Millikin University in Decatur. Tiffany Bargmann hit two triples for the Panthers and drove in two runs, while Taylor Bagnell (2 for 3, three RBI), Hahn (2 for 3, two RBI) and Kiera Spratt (1 for 4, three RBI) each chipped in offensively. Noelle Woodmansee and Aliya Holloman each had a hit for the Hawks (0-1).

Rantoul 3, Urbana 1. The host Eagles relied on a stout pitching performance from Madisyn Walton to register the nonconference win. Walton tossed a complete game, striking out nine, and only allowing one hit to the Tigers (0-1) in Urbana's season opener. Jenna Sanford (2 for 3,), Lexi Sherrick (1 for 3, RBI) and Kianna Berlatsky (1 for 3, RBI) paced the offense for Rantoul (2-0). Courtney Fouke had the lone hit for Urbana, while Allison Deck struck out five in a complete game.

Danville 1, Charleston 1. After both teams played to a tie through regulation, the Vikings prevailed in penalty kicks. Lauren Ellis scored the lone goal for Danville (1-1) during regulation, while Ellis, Marisol Segura, Emma Towne, Grace Awodeha and Nora Abdelghani each netted a goal during the penalty kick shootout.


Champaign Central 3, Uni High 0. The visiting Maroons took a 2-0 halftime lead and kept it up in the second half at the UI Turf Fields to deliver a nonconference win in their season opener. Grayson Alexander scored a goal and tallied an assist for Champaign Central (1-0), while Bella Ortiz and Ella Kasten each scored a goal. Katelyn Swartz and Lainey Somers each produced an assist, while Haley Hartleb made five saves in net to preserve the shutout against the Illineks (0-2).

St. Thomas More 1, Urbana 0. The visiting Sabers (1-1) prevailed behind a first-half goal from Megan Clavey to hang on for a nonconference win against the Tigers (1-1). Tatum DeVriese recorded the assist.Matt Daniels
