Wednesday's prep highlights: Maroons Staab records record win

In baseball

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 16, Westville 6. Both Asa Ray and Weston Strawser scored three runs to pace the Blue Devils (13-5) in a Vermilion Valley Conference game played at Bismarck. Cyrus Dougherty hit a homer for the Tigers (0-20).

Cerro Gordo/Bement 11, Arcola 3. Ethan Mann clobbered a home run and Jacob Rogers garnered three hits for the Broncos (5-7) in a Little Okaw Valley Conference game played at Arcola. Beau Smothers and Beau Jones each scored a run and smacked two hits for the Purple Riders (1-8).

Champaign Central 5, Bloomington 2. Maroons coach John Staab became the school's career wins leader, garnering his 361st victory in a Big 12 Conference game played at Champaign. Connor Milton was a hitting machine, smashing two doubles and a triple for the Maroons (13-6). Hurler Joel Sarver fanned 10 batters for Central.

Danville 4, Centennial 3. Ayden LaMar connected for a double to lead the Vikings (6-7) to a Big 12 victory in a game played at Champaign. Kendall Green stole a base for the Chargers (12-5). Danville jumped to a 4-0 lead through five innings before the Chargers rallied for two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to make the game close.

Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 1, Eureka 0. The Falcons (10-2) won a pitchers' duel in a Heart of Illinois Conference game played at Eureka. Falcons hurler Nathan Garard mowed down 14 batters, gave up a single hit and scored the game's only run.

Mahomet-Seymour 13, St. Bede 0. Jon Latham and Jack McHale doubled and Ben Greenberger and Nate McFall tripled to lead the way for the Bulldogs (10-4-1) in a nonconference road win.

Maroa-Forsyth 12, LeRoy 11. The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a nonconference deadlock. Nate Sammer had two doubles and three RBI, and Colin Meyer had two hits and three RBI for the visiting Panthers (12-3).

Oakwood 6, Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Chrisman 2. Brady Howard stole a base and knocked in two runs for the Comets (9-7) in a VVC game played at Georgetown. Garrett Latoz and Kaden Mingee scored for the Buffaloes (6-5).

Olympia 18, Unity 8. Kyle Miller hit for the cycle and scored three runs to pace the Rockets (7-0) in an Illini Prairie Conference game played at Tolono.

St. Joseph-Ogden 13, Pontiac 12. The Spartans (14-5-2) held off a furious seventh-inning Indians rally to earn the victory in an IPC game played at Pontiac. Adam Rose garnered four hits and Drew Coursey delivered three RBI for the Spartans.

Salt Fork 1, Hoopeston Area 0. Andy Musson's third-inning run stood up for the Storm (11-2) in a VVC game played at Hoopeston. Gage Romack was dominant on the mound for the Storm, fanning 12 batters while yielding a single hit. Graham Eighner was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Cornjerkers (7-12). He struck out nine batters over 62 / 3 innings.

Tuscola 11, Clinton 1. Brayden VonLanken collected four hits to lead the Warriors (17-2) in Central Illinois Conference action.VonLanken singled in the first, third and sixth innings and homered in the fourth in a game played at Tuscola. Jalen Quinn and Max Wyninger also homered for Tuscola. Braden Cross had a first-inning solo homer for the Maroons (5-5).

Villa Grove/Heritage 12, Hutsonville-Palestine 9. Kane Davison was in the zone, homering three times and driving in eight runs for the Hawks (14-5) in LOVC road action.

In softball

Arcola 16, Cerro Gordo/Bement 0. Taylor Spelman singled, doubled and tripled for the Purple Riders (6-9) in a Little Okaw Valley Conference game played at Arcola. KayLee Hohlbauch hurled a complete-game five-hitter for the Purple Riders. Megan Hart had a double for the Broncos (3-10).

Armstrong-Potomac 22, Schlarman 20. Jess Goulding and Natalie Schluter both had three hits and Denley Heller clubbed a homer for the Trojans (5-3) in a VVC slugfest played at Danville. Emma Wilkins had five hits and Janiah Newell had four stolen bases for the Hilltoppers (1-12).

Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 6, Argenta-Oreana 0. Leadoff hitter Reagan Miller reached base four times and crossed the plate three times for the Knights (11-6) in an LOVC game played at Arthur. Cassi Newbanks struck out six batters for the Bombers (8-8).

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 10, Westville 6. The host Blue Devils (8-7) produced eight of the first nine runs and never looked back en route to a VVC victory over the Tigers (3-10). Hunter Edwards doubled twice and drove in two runs for BHRA, which received the latter output from Laynee Dickison as well. Maizy Lawnicki doubled, tripled and brought in two runs for Westville.

Blue Ridge 10, Iroquois West 0. Avery Place pitched five scoreless innings, striking out seven along the way, and added two hits and three RBI for the Knights (9-6) in nonconference play. Elise Swanstrom was 4 for 4 and Jasmine Bennett had two hits and two RBI for Blue Ridge.

Champaign Central 14, St. Thomas More 0. Maroons hurlers Alexandria Sutton and Lexi Williams combined for a shutout in the nonconference tilt. The Maroons (4-6) churned out six doubles, including two by Natalie Stumph and one each by Sutton, Williams, Taylor Cribbett and Lauryn McArthur. Kennedy Record took the loss for the Sabers (0-9).

Georgetown-Ridge Farm 13, Oakwood 1. Sophia Ashby scored three times and Bailee Whittaker had two RBI to pace the Buffs (12-3) in a VVC game played at Georgetown.

Heyworth 3, Fisher 2. Shelbee Owens singled and doubled for the Bunnies (12-5), who couldn't hold a 2-0 lead in Heart of Illinois Conference play.

LeRoy 7, Flanagan-Cornell 0. Charly Warlow fired a complete-game two-hitter for the Panthers (10-7) in an HOIC game played at LeRoy. Aynsleigh Defries legged out a two-bagger for the Panthers.

Mt. Zion 14, St. Joseph-Ogden 3. The Braves homered three times in first six pitches in a nonconference game played at St. Joseph. Hannah Dukeman had three hits, including a home run, for the Spartans (13-4).

Mahomet-Seymour 13, Rantoul 1. Four different Bulldogs hit round-trippers in a nonconference game played at Mahomet. Aubrie Shore, Samantha Tamburo, Karley Yergler and Allison Nofziger all went yard for M-S. Bella Shields scored the only Eagles run.

Salt Fork 16, Chrisman 0. Mackenzie Russell fired a 13-strikeout no-hitter and drove in five runs for the Storm (10-4) in a Vermilion Valley Conference game played at Chrisman. Jaiden Baum had three RBI for Salt Fork. Pitcher Hallee Watters had two strikeouts for the Cardinals (1-12).

Tuscola 11, Clinton 0. Ashton Smith pitched a no-hitter and was two pitches away from a perfect game for the Warriors (19-1) in a Central Illinois Conference road victory. Natalie Bates was 3 for 3 with four stolen bases and two runs scored.

Unity 3, Olympia 2. The Rockets (18-3) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to stun the Trojans in an Illini Prairie Conference game played at Tolono. Elyce Knudsen had a hit and an RBI and Grace Frye delivered two hits and an RBI for the Rockets.

Villa Grove 3, Cumberland 2. The Blue Devils (13-10) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth in an LOVC game played at Villa Grove. Madison Burwell smacked two home runs and Reagan Cheely clubbed a homer for the Blue Devils.

In girls' soccer

Normal U-High 5, Champaign Central 0. The Maroons (6-4-1) gave up three goals in the first half and two goals in the second half of a nonconference loss.

In track and field

At Mattoon. Quemarii Williams won the 200- and 400-meter dashes and Noah Hile triumphed in the 1,600 run for Danville at the Mattoon Invitational. Champaign Central's Kai Baumgartner captured the 300 hurdles and triple jump. Danville finished third, Urbana took fourth and Central finished fifth in the nine-school meet.

In boys' tennis

At Urbana. Bill Layton and Roman Mineyev won in singles for the Tigers in their 3-2 nonconference loss to Morton.
