Huddle up: Road to state continues for these area teams

Postseason hardware is on the line for nine area baseball and softball teams on Saturday. Sports editor MATT DANIELS breaks down their respective title games:

Salt Fork (23-4) vs. Mt. Pulaski (23-5), 9:30 a.m.

Kotah Broeker and Gage Romack were freshmen when Salt Fork last won a Class 1A sectional title at Danville Stadium. Now seniors, they're key in bringing another plaque back to Catlin.

LeRoy (23-5) vs. Ottawa Marquette (29-1), 11 a.m.

Rematch of 2016 Class 1A sectional final that LeRoy won 6-4 at Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington. Venue is the same, and expect another close game between two solid teams.

St. Joseph-Ogden (27-8-2) vs. Tuscola (28-2), 2 p.m.

Logan Tabeling for Tuscola. Crayton Burnett for SJ-O. Both teams could turn to their quality aces in Class 2A sectional title game at Illinois Wesleyan's Horenberger Field. Expect a pitcher's duel.

Champaign Central (27-9) vs. Charleston (23-11-1), 3 p.m.

Two teams just met on May 13 in Charleston, with Central winning 4-2. The Maroons are 8-1 this month and will try to add another win in Class 3A Mahomet-Seymour Regional title game.

Salt Fork (23-6 vs. Villa Grove (23-12), 10 a.m.

With each team vying for their first-ever spot in the Elite Eight, plenty is at stake in this Class 1A St. Thomas More Sectional title game. Both will use a similar-sounding pitcher (Jordan Jones for Salt Fork and Jordyn Ray for Villa Grove) and both are fresh off comeback victories in their respective sectional semifinal games.

Unity (27-5) vs. Olympia (24-7), 11 a.m.

Unity has never won a sectional title, and the Rockets get a chance to do so during the Class 2A sectional championship game on Olympia's home field in Stanford. Freshmen have keyed this postseason run by Unity, but veterans like Elyce Knudsen, Jalyn Powell, Morgan Steinman and others are vital to the Rockets.

Mahomet-Seymour (19-10) vs. Charleston (28-4), 11 a.m.

Charleston ended the Bulldogs' season last year with a 14-3 win in a Class 3A sectional semifinal game. Now M-S, led by Aubrie Shore and Samantha Tamburo, will need to knock off the Trojans if it wants to extend its season beyond the weekend and reach Tuesday's sectional semifinal game in Clinton.
