Davis relieved to have No. 300 tucked away

DECATUR – It took Scott Davis three tries to nail down coaching win No. 300.

He's glad it didn't take any longer.

"It's a little bit of a relief," Davis said Friday after Champaign Central hung on to beat Decatur Eisenhower 51-50 in a Big 12 boys' basketball game. "People obviously have been talking about it, people wishing me luck. It's nice to take care of it."

Late-game trouble at the free throw line by Central gave Eisenhower a chance.

"I guess they wanted me to earn that 300th win," Davis said.

Jay Simpson scored 15 points and Noah Lessaris had 11 for the Maroons, who went on a 14-4 third-quarter burst for a 43-33 lead. Andrew Miller and Miles McCarty each added eight points in the win.

Scott Davis, Champaign Central’s 19th-year basketball head coach, earned his 300th career victory Friday on his third attempt. He is the second coach in school history to reach that milestone. His career record is 300-188. A look at his signature triumphs:
