Robinson delivers for Vikings
DANVILLE – A Danville ironman rotation proved its mettle Friday.
Fending off repeated second-half comebacks by Champaign Central, the Viking Six prevailed 75-71 in a hard-fought Big 12 Conference basketball regular season finale.
"We've had to rely on them since January," Danville coach Gary Tidwell said of his core group since the season-ending knee injury to star guard D'Lando Carter late last month.
On Danville's Senior Night, no one was more reliable for the Vikings than Joey Robinson. The senior forward scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to help keep the persistent Maroons at arm's length.
"He came up really big in the second half," Tidwell said. "To step up at the end speaks volumes about his growth and development."
After building a 35-25 halftime lead, Danville saw Central twice draw within four points in the third quarter. Guard Clayton Jones and forward Noah Lessaris each scored six points in the period to rally the Maroons within 47-43 entering the final quarter.
But behind Robinson's seven points, the Vikings opened the fourth period with a 13-4 run to rebuild their advantage to 60-47. During that stretch, Central was unable to capitalize on several attempts right at the rim.
"There were probably four possessions that we had point-blank shots and came away with nothing," Maroons coach Scott Davis said.
Centennial 63, Mattoon 50. Josh Piper scored 27 points as the host Chargers pulled away in the second half. Corvon Butler added 10 points.
Urbana 59, Eisenhower 50. Eric Jamerson had 12 points and six rebounds to lift the host Tigers. Darrion Brown also scored 12 for Urbana, which sank 5 of 9 three-pointers.
