Friday's highlights: Chargers fall in title game
Boys' basketball
Centralia tournament. Playing for fifth place, Champaign Central's fourth-quarter rally fell short in a 57-54 loss to Bogan. JORDAN CAROLINE (13 points), CLAYTON JONES (12 points) and CORVON BUTLER (12 points, 10 rebounds) sparked the Maroons.
Earlier Friday, Central beat St. Louis Riverview 72-67 behind 17 points apiece from Jones and Caroline (10 rebounds).
Collinsville tournament. DONALD McKINLEY scored 14 points and BRANDON GLASS had 11 in Urbana's 62-59 loss to Quincy.
State Farm Holiday Classic. Quincy Notre Dame rallied from an early deficit to beat CPCI 56-44 in the small-school division title game
Pontiac tournament. Despite 27 points from TRENT SHERFIELD and 21 from DENNIS HIGHTOWER, Danville lost to Waukegan 76-74. DONTE INGRAM added 11 points in the loss.
Kankakee tournament. JAKE LYZNICKI had 12 points in Watseka's 47-38 loss to St. Anne in the seventh-place game.
Girls' basketball
State Farm Holiday Classic. Centennial's bid for a big-school tournament title fell short, Maine South hanging on for a 55-43 win. A slow start did in the Chargers, who trailed 18-11 after one quarter. CHELSEA CROSS had 13 points and CHANTAL MEACHAM added nine in the loss.
St. Thomas More lost to Rock Island Alleman 42-38 in the small-school third-place game. RANDA HARSHBARGER and LEXI WALLEN led the Sabers with 10 points apiece.
Chrisman Cardinal Classic. All-tourney pick Brooke Markwalder scored 19 points as Armstrong-Potomac beat Tri-County 43-28 in the championship game. ABBY SMITH had 10 points for the Titans.
In the third-place game, DALLAS McCORMICK's 19 points led Heritage past Schlarman 57-56. JANELLE MARION had 18 points in the loss.
In the fifth-place game, Georgetown-Ridge Farm beat Oakwood 46-31 behind BRITTANY HAY (14 points), MAYA GREEN (12) and ALYSSA SAWYER (10). MAKENZIE BAKER had 11 points in the loss.
In the seventh-place game, JI'CEE LACEY's 10 points paced Westville past Chrisman 46-33. SARAH ELLIS had 11 points in the loss.
Charleston tournament. HANNAH WASCHER scored 30 points to lead Rantoul past Urbana 48-39. KANETRA TOWNS had 11 points and KARIDIA SHELBY 10 for the Tigers.
Swimming
Down State 8 Relays. Centennial finished third and won four events: 2x50 free (Gabe Omo-Osagie, Blas Garcia-Canga), 2x100 free (Omo-Osagie, Garcia-Canga), 4x200 free (Omo-Osagie, Thomas Mueller, Trenton Reeve, Garcia-Canga) an 4x100 free (Omo-Osagie, Mueller, Reeve, Garcia-Canga).
Wrestling
New Year's Challenge. Second-seeded LeRoy advanced to the championship dual of the 22-team event at Huff Hall before losing to top-seeded Wilmington 30-28. Bradley Simmons (285), TY SANDY (195), Devin Bulington (126), Justin Meyers (138) and Tyler Woolridge (145) each went 4-0 as the Panthers went 3-1 Friday.
Lincoln tournament. CAMERON MAMMEN won the 170-pound division to lead Urbana.
Bomber Classic. Oakwood's DACIAN ALVAREZ, who won the 120 title, was named the Lower Weight Outstanding Wrestler at the 17-team meet. ASHTON HATON also won a weight division (113) for Oakwood, which finished ninth. KYLE POWERS won at 132 for third-place Argenta-Oreana. Hoopeston Area's ROBBIE IRVIN won at 160.
