Teams of the Week: LeRoy girls in spotlight
LeROY GIRLS' BASKETBALL
Coach Danielle Cooley's team (27-3) not only won the first sectional title in school history but also stunned top-ranked Annawan in a Class 1A super-sectional. The senior-laden team will play in the state semifinals vs. Freeport Aquin on Friday.
CENTENNIAL BOYS' BASKETBALL
Coach Tim Lavin's Chargers (10-16) won't win the Big 12 title, but they are playing the role of spoiler. Centennial knocked Normal West out of a share for first by rallying from a halftime deficit to win its home finale. Devin Carter scored 24 points.
URBANA UNI HIGH BOYS' BASKETBALL
Coach Al Renner's Illineks are hitting their stride at tournament time. The team had won six of its last seven games entering Wednesday night's regional semifinal showdown against the only team it had lost to this month (Judah Christian).
MAHOMET-SEYMOUR BOYS' BASKETBALL
Coach Chad Benedict's Bulldogs (14-12) topped a Rantoul team they had lost to by 11 points previously in their home finale. Brad Hermann and Matt Turner each scored 14 points to lead M-S. Clay Kibler nailed three three-pointers for the home team, which trailed after one quarter.
