Teams of the Week: LeRoy wrestlers dominate spotlight
Coach Doug DeWald's squad acquired a second state championship trophy to add to the school's trophy case. The Class 1A wrestling hardware will join the 1996 Class 2A title in football. The second-rated Panthers (27-1) beat schools ranked first, fourth and fifth in the team-dual state finals.
LeROY GIRLS' BASKETBALL
Coach Danielle Cooley's squad defeated the state's top-ranked Class 1A team (Annawan) in the super-sectionals and went on to capture the fourth-place trophy at the state tournament. Six seniors were key contributors to a program that set a school record by winning 27 of 32 games.
CPCI BOYS' BASKETBALL
Coach Kevin Long's team, which was ranked 11th in the state's final Class 1A poll, captured its eighth regional title in the past 14 years. Cole Hasselbring scored a team-high 11 points for the Timberwolves. Teammate Alex Rabe added 10 points, four coming in overtime against St. Anne.
RIDGEVIEW BOYS' BASKETBALL
Coach Rodney Kellar's Mustangs had to rely on their comeback abilities after falling behind Blue Ridge 36-30 with four minutes to play in the regional finals at LeRoy. Ridgeview ended the game with a 13-0 run but didn't take the lead for good until the final 90 seconds.
