IHSA shifts site for Normal teams

For those interested in watching Friday night's Class 4A regional championship boys' basketball game between Normal Community and Normal West, don't go to the regional host site, Danville High School.

In a logical and common-sense move, the IHSA on Thursday shifted the 7:30 title game to the Shirk Center in Bloomington. The two Normal schools are 1-1 against each other this season.

The IHSA decision also means that the two Danville three-point shooters (Devyn McGuire and Marcus Merriweather) will have to make a road trip if they have hopes of advancing in the individual competition, which will start about 6:50.

The IHSA had previously announced the winners of the Danville and Moline regionals, who face one another in Tuesday's Collinsville Sectional, would instead be re-routed to Pekin for that semifinal contest. The IHSA should be commended for these cost-cutting and travel-saving measures, not only for the teams involved but also for their fans. Let's hope this precedent is followed in future years — and in other sports. Three cheers all the way around.
