Tuesday's prep highlights: Joop, Sabers victorious
In boys’ basketball
St. Thomas More 55, Oakwood 17. Storm Joop scored 15 points to lead the Sabers to a home win. Kevin Carroll (11) and Mike Plecki (10) also scored in double figures for STM.
PBL 45, Clifton Central 35. Drew Schrodt’s 12 points led a balanced attack that carried host Paxton-Buckley-Loda.
Danville First Baptist 68, Illinois Central Christian 32. Jonathan Garver sank six three-pointers and scored 32 points to lead First Baptist to a home victory.
Mahomet-Seymour 63, Olympia 43. The Bulldogs built a 36-7 halftime lead and cruised to a Corn Belt road win. Brad Herrmann had 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals for M-S. Teammate Connor Diedrich shot 7 of 10 and scored 17 points.
LeRoy 70, Fisher 64. The Panthers outscored Fisher 24-15 in the third quarter and held off a Bunnies rally to earn a home win. Dalton Stewart scored 33 points for LeRoy, which went 13 of 19 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Tate Estes led Fisher with 17 points.
Arthur Okaw Christian 55, Villa Grove 34. Wes Henningsen scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half to lead the Conquering Riders to a road victory.
Shiloh 61, Chrisman 35. Cyrus Furgeson racked up 25 points for Shiloh in a road win. Chris Hoult paced the Cardinals with 13 points.
St. Joseph-Ogden 82, Unity 48. The Spartans outscored Unity 29-9 in the second quarter to take command in a road victory. Brent Schluter led SJ-O with 21 points. Matt Restad and Justin Deters had 11 points apiece for the Rockets.
Westville 53, Heritage 41. Layn White and Jeffery Thompson combined for 27 points to lead the Tigers to a road win. John Taylor and Brandon Richardson had 11 points apiece for Heritage.
Judah Christian 63, Bement 47. Dylan Hamilton sank four three-pointers and scored 16 points for the Tribe in a road victory. Bement’s Connor Gross had five treys and led all scorers with 20 points.
Tri-Point 55, Iroquois West 54. Keaton Zirkle (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Jordan Hansen (14 points, 10 rebounds) produced double-doubles for the Raiders in a home loss.
Heyworth 72, Blue Ridge 68. Michael Plunk scored 28 points for the Knights in a road loss.
Flanagan-Cornell 59, Ridgeview 43. Host Ridgeview absorbed its first loss of the season after being outscored 15-6 in the second quarter. Trevor McIntosh scored 12 points for the Mustange (5-1).
Arcola 49, Stewardson-Strasburg 47. Kollin Seaman sank a 17-foot shot at the buzzer to lift the Purple Riders to a road win. Seaman finished with 12 points and teammate Zach Hudson had seven points and seven rebounds.
In girls’ basketball
PBL 52, Urbana Uni High 38. Jori Maynard scored 11 points and three teammates added 10 apiece to lead the Panthers to a road win. Illineks senior Emma Hoyer reached the 1,000-rebound mark for her career and finished with 15 rebounds, 14 points, nine blocks and four steals.
Normal Calvary 40, Buckley Christ Lutheran 32. Olivia Janssen’s 18 points led BCL in a home defeat.
At Fithian. Austin Hedrick (160 pounds), Wesley Kibler (195) and Jordan Hartman (220) each recorded pins in under a minute for St. Joseph-Ogden in a 51-23 victory against Oakwood.
At Gibson City. Jacob Franklin (195) and Josh Wallick (285) had first-period pins for GCMS-Fisher in a 63-12 victory against Reed-Custer.
At Bismarck. Jarod Noel (182) needed only 21 seconds to earn a pin for Bismarck-Henning in a 32-31 victory against Danville. Aaron Weaver (126) had a 45-second pin for the Vikings.
At Normal. Indy Whalen (160) and Brandon Klein (182) earned wins in contested matches for Champaign Central in a 52-18 loss to Normal Community. In the Maroons’ 54-13 loss to Normal West, Trystyn Schoonover (170) won by pin and Toby Rivera (195) won by major decision.
At Mahomet. Derek Grant (152) and Parker Overmyer (220) recorded two pins apiece, leading Mahomet-Seymour to a 54-22 victory against Lincoln and a 46-23 victory against Centennial. Darren Wynn (138) had two pins and Austen Schott (132) had a pin and a technical fall for Centennial, which also was edged by Lincoln 38-36.
In boys’ swimming
At Champaign. Evan Miller won two individual events and anchored a first-place relay to lead Champaign Central to a 93-92 victory against Normal University High at Unit 4 Pool. Miller captured the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and joined Garrett Barnard, Brandon Bell and Ashi Bhatt on the winning 400 freestyle relay. Bell accounted for the Maroons’ other victory, in the 100 backstroke.
