Vaughn, Finke pace Chargers

CHAMPAIGN — Decatur Eisenhower controlled the pace, but it couldn’t control the outcome.

Centennial found a way to overcome the Panthers’ slow-down tactics Friday night to pull out a 52-33 Big 12 victory.

“They slowed it down, really slow,” Chargers coach Tim Lavin said. “There (were) times they weren’t even looking at the basket. ... It was just a tough game to play because nobody could really get into a rhythm.”

Senior center Luke Vaughn led Centennial with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Michael Finke also recorded a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds). Dedric Byrd added 11 points and three assists.

Eisenhower was within 37-28 after three quarters before the Big 12 leaders put the game out of reach with a 15-5 fourth-period run.

“We had some open shots the first half; they just weren’t going in,” Lavin said. “It was tough to get going because they took so much time off the clock. We just did a better job in the second half of attacking the zone.”
