Athletes of the Week: Michael and Hocking

Nate Michael, St. Joseph-Ogden, junior, Basketball
Recently: Scored 29 points in two games as the Spartans won their first sectional title since 2007.

In his words: “It’s been really, really fun. I couldn’t have asked to do it with a better group of guys. We’re like a family out there.”

I wear No. 23 because ... when I got a jersey my freshman year, that’s the one they had left. I decided to stick with it.

In a 1-on-1 game against your dad (former Illini Tom Michael) ... in a game to 21, it’d be 21-19 me. I think I’d try to take him outside and dribble-drive and hope he couldn’t stay with me.

I learned to shoot ... from my dad. We started at a young age. He made sure everything stayed normal, and I didn’t pick up bad habits.

My favorite shooter ... Reggie Miller

I’m always texting ... my friends.

I’m dying to see ... “21 and Over.”

I need concert tickets to ... Drake.

In my Final Four, I have ... Indiana, Michigan State, Syracuse and Duke.

St. Joseph-Ogden High is ... a great place to be.

Recently: Won the high jump, the 55-meter hurdles and anchored the winning 1,600 relay in the Decatur Area Indoor Meet at Mount Zion.

In her words: “I want to get to state, finish in the top three. And I would love to break the school record in the hurdles.”

My favorite athlete ... is Lolo Jones.

My role model ... is (former Illini) Abe Jones, my personal coach.

In five years ... I want to be running track at LSU.

My favorite track ... is the (UI) Armory.

When are you winning the Illinois Marathon? I don’t like running that far.
