Teams of the Week: STM boys' track & field in spotlight

✰✰✰✰
ST. THOMAS MORE BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD
The Sabers’ 3,200-meter relay foursome is running fast early and often. The previous school record in the event was 8 minutes, 24 seconds. STM ran an 8:16, followed by an 8:07.66 in its last two indoor outings. The group of runners from the cross-country state championship team (Nick Hess, Sean Kelly, Jacob Helfrich and Sam Powers) is shooting for a sub-7:55 clocking outdoors.

✰✰✰
ST. JOSEPH-OGDEN BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Spartans’ reward for a sectional championship is a Class 2A super-sectional date tonight against a 26-3 Riverton team that suffered one of its losses to Monticello. SJ-O overpowered Monticello 65-38 in the sectional finals at Unity. Of the first four postseason wins for the Spartans (28-3), three have been by margins of at least 27 points.

✰✰
CISSNA PARK BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Timberwolves (21-10) have been led in scoring in all four postseason games by 6-foot-4 senior center Cole Hasselbring. He has eclipsed the 20-point mark in three of the games. Cissna takes on top-ranked Illini Central, which placed third at state in 2012 and returns its main nucleus, tonight in a 7:30 Class 1A super-sectional at Illinois State.

CENTENNIAL BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Chargers (21-8) lost three of their final four regular season games but regrouped to annex a regional crown, avenging a loss to Urbana in the finals. Five of the seven athletes who played in the 3A regional title game were seniors. It’s a group that’s one win from a berth in the Sweet 16, and that chance comes tonight against Taylorville in Mount Zion.
