Chart toppers: Class 3A and 4A hoops teams to watch, courtesy Fred Kroner

Chicago Simeon
Besides watching to see if coach Robert Smith’s program can win its fourth consecutive Class 4A state title and sixth in eight years, there might be a Donte Ingram sighting. The former Danville High athlete is one of the Wolverines’ reserves.

Morgan Park
The Mustangs topped the Class 3A state rankings all nine weeks that media members voted this season. Can guards Kyle Davis (headed to Dayton) and Bill Garrett Jr. (headed to DePaul) elevate the school to the No. 1 position last achieved in 1976?

Proviso East
The Class 4A school in Maywood has four state titles on its resume, but current seniors Sterling Brown (headed to Southern Methodist) and Paris Lee (headed to Illinois State) fell one win shy of the top spot last year and want to make amends.

Chicago Orr
It’s possible that for the third time in the six years since the IHSA created four state champions in boys’ basketball, two entries from the Public League could play for a title. In 2008, Marshall beat Simeon in 3A. In 2010, Simeon beat Young in 4A. Orr is a 3A semifinalist.

Edwardsville
The Tigers were expected to be in contention for a state championship, but that was the girls’ program, which finished second a year ago but did not return to the finals this year. Edwardsville’s boys last earned a state trophy in basketball in 1956.
